What is zuo yuezi?

Zuo yuezi, literally sitting the month, is the Chinese postpartum confinement practice of roughly 30 to 40 days of rest, warmth, and careful eating that lets a new mother recover and establish milk supply.

The food principles are specific and consistent: meals are served warm, never cold or raw. Ginger, warming spices, and slow-cooked broths support circulation and digestion. Easily digestible proteins and iron-rich foods rebuild strength after birth, and certain foods are favored to encourage milk supply.

The challenge for most families today is simple: someone has to cook all of it, every day, for weeks, exactly when there is the least time and energy to do so.

How Milky Oat's menu honors these principles

Ginger and warming spices

Our kitchen leans on ginger and warming spices throughout the menu, the same foundations zuo yuezi calls for.

Lactation support

Common questions

Is Milky Oat a traditional Chinese confinement kitchen?

No. Milky Oat is an Ayurvedic-informed postpartum meal service, and its principles overlap strongly with zuo yuezi: warm, freshly prepared, easily digestible, lactation-supporting food. It is a natural fit for families who want confinement-aligned nourishment without cooking it themselves.

Do you deliver in the Bay Area?

Yes. Milky Oat delivers across the San Francisco Bay Area and parts of the Central Coast, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, in reusable insulated boxes.

Are the meals cold or raw?

Never. Every dish is slow-cooked and intended to be reheated and enjoyed warm, in line with confinement practice.

Can you accommodate dietary needs?

Yes. Every menu is already free of dairy, soy, refined sugar, peanuts, shellfish, and pork, and we accommodate individual restrictions. A 2-day trial lets you taste the menu first.
