Becoming FRTIL w/ Meghan Mugg

Meghan Mugg is a practitioner, mother, and the visionary founder of FRTIL. Driven by a deep respect for natural ecosystems and ancestral vitality, she creates food-forward, whole-food supplements designed to bridge the gap between pure nature and modern life. I went through my entire pregnancy without taking a conventional prenatal vitamin, so finding FRTIL's pristine oyster, whole-food vitamin C, and grass-fed liver in my postpartum season felt like a total revelation. I am completely in love with how deeply grounded, nourished, and physically resilient these foundational nutrients leave me feeling every single day.

I went through my entire pregnancy without taking a prenatal vitamin. I was so happy to discover your line in postpartum and have been taking the oyster, vitamin c, and liver regularly now for a couple months. What inspired you to create FRTIL? How is it supporting your own nourishment?

What inspired me to create Frtil was not finding a solution in my own life that satisfied the criteria or standards I have for my own family. After working with clients for a handful of years in my own practice, I saw only two sides of the coin: strictly whole-food sourcing companies who could never agree with the use of a high-quality synthetic from time to time, or fully synthetic companies that formulate like their customer base doesn’t even consume real food. Neither sat right with me. I saw gaps where most people need support in our modern world and began asking questions around how a few simple foundational elements could better people’s well-being and ultimately their lives. I have always been drawn to nature, animals, ecosystems, and the people within them. There is an intelligence in our soil that is transferred to our food and ultimately to our bodies, which is why food-forward formulas with the highest quality ingredients are at the heart of all we do.

What does a normal day of food and supplements look like for you?

Food is a foundation I take seriously for myself and my family. Even though we live on a very small plot of land in Los Angeles, we are working toward becoming more self-sustainable in regard to the food we consume. My girls and I will typically collect eggs from our chickens in the morning and have breakfast within an hour of waking. I joke around that if I don’t have a large breakfast with a minimum of four eggs, it’s probably not going to be a good day. I always feel drawn to take our Vitamin C and Beef Liver in the morning. I love this duo for so many reasons – amazing for the iron recycling system, protection from oxidative stress, and resiliency in general. I’ll usually have a raw milk latte with our own goat’s milk after breakfast with a splash of maple syrup.

Lunch is typically leftovers from the night before. My husband has his own career and works outside of the home, whereas I work full time from home throughout the week. Leftovers are key when it comes to keeping everyone satiated and moods happy throughout the day with two kiddos. If we don’t have leftovers, we’ll make something easy and quick such as egg, tuna, or sardine salad with homemade sourdough or sourdough crackers and a raw carrot salad.

We try to have our dinners planned every Sunday for the week ahead so evenings are not chaotic and we know exactly what needs to be done to get dinner on the table at an appropriate time. My husband tends to be the cook in our home. We are a purely ingredients household and regularly rely on soups and stews, burgers and fries, tacos, etc. for dinner. Before bed, I love taking our Magnesium Glycinate and Oyster (Zn). I very rarely take supplements outside of our own, to be honest. After seeing the other side of the supplement industry, it’s hard to trust what others are doing.

When speaking to fertility at large, what are the most important elements outside of nutrition in your mind?

Spending time in nature and being aligned with your values and God-given purpose. Nature tells us just about everything we need to know. Nowadays, we are incredibly reliant on doctors, devices, AI, influencers, etc. to tell us things about our physiology that we often already know. Information can be empowering, but it can also be overwhelming and even do more harm than good. Becoming aligned with our light environment, our soil, where our food comes from, and fully understanding and living out our purpose is more important than anything else when it comes to being a fertile, vital human. I always like to ask others, or even remind myself, what were the things I loved to do as a child? What do I no longer integrate into my life as an adult that brought so much joy to me in my purest state?

What do your self care rituals look like?

I would say taking time for my own self-care is my greatest downfall. Ask my husband haha. The things that never get away from me, no matter how busy I am, are simple things: spending time outside with my girls or our animals, horseback riding, morning sunlight, nourishing my body, and a good skincare routine. I need to make more time for the sauna, weight lifting, and getting to bed before 10pm. These are absolute game changers for me.

I loved something you shared about Vitamin C being more than just an immunity support vitamin. Can you expand on this in terms of postpartum?

Oh yes! So many things here, but I will be brief. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient in the iron recycling system, so it can be wonderful to pair with iron-rich foods such as beef liver, grass-fed beef, lamb, etc. to help rebuild blood stores after birth. Vitamin C is also shown throughout peer-reviewed research to help support progesterone production and healthy cortisol balance, ultimately supporting hormone health, which can be tremendously helpful in the postpartum season.

What are three things you’d gift a brand new mama?

Nothing compares to gifting a home-cooked meal if a new mama is close in proximity. If not, a beautifully sourced meal delivery such as Milky Oat. In my opinion, food and quality time are the most important things you could gift a mother in her postpartum season. As long as I am well-fed with a newborn, I feel like I can conquer all things, even if sleep deprived. A natural fiber lounge set is always such a special gift as well.

Personally, I’ve moved far away from measurements when it comes to food and supplements and towards the energetics. I’m curious if you have anything to say about this?

I couldn’t agree more. I can’t remember the last time I measured my food or even “made sure I was taking my supplements everyday.” These are habits that now come naturally. When you step away from analytics, measurements, outside advice, etc. and simply get back to basics, you open up the ability to hone into your intuition. Your body will tell you when something just feels “right” – you just need to clear out the noise to hear it.
